Mysteries of the Abyss: The Legend of Mel's Hole

Walk Manastash Ridge after the most famous bottomless pit in America — a hole that exists only because a man phoned a radio show in 1997 — and work out what is actually down there.

What this is

🕳️ A text game you play by talking to Grok. You walk a real ridge in Washington State looking for a hole that may never have existed. The landscape and the broadcast are documented; the hole is not, and the game does not pretend otherwise. You get a numbered menu every turn, and you can always type something of your own instead.

On the night of February 21, 1997 a caller told Art Bell he had a nine-and-a-half-foot hole on his land west of Ellensburg, Washington that swallowed 80,000 feet of fishing line without touching bottom. Nobody has ever found the hole, and nobody has ever found the caller. Work the ridge as a geologist, a radio archivist, a local reporter, a woodsman who cut timber up there, or a paranormal investigator who wants it to be real. The basalt is real, the old gold shafts are real, the 327,000-acre Army range next door is real — the hole is the question. Type "fact" any time and the game breaks character to tell you what the record says, what geologists actually measured, and what was invented for the story. Type "depth" to see any claimed depth against the deepest holes on Earth. Every scene quietly composes a full media set you can picture or save, and saved scenes become AI-generated films at momatio. Concluding that there is no hole is a legitimate way to win — and it is not the same as concluding there is nothing to find.
